1 1/2" x 1 1/2"
Pounded black ash
|
This twill weave miniature has continual hand-shaping during the weaving process to create this distinctive modified cat-head shape that is "squashed down". This is a very challenging design to accomplish, each completed basket is uniquely its very own shape.

DBSQ
DOUBLE SQUARE BASKET
|

1 1/4" x 1 1/4" x 1 3/4" or 3" x 3" x 4"
Pounded black ash
(Usually woven with one basket wall, but optional double-wall version available in the larger size)
|
An intricate twill weave is crafted on this miniature, whose shape is its distinctive feature. The name is derived from the juxtapositioning of the basket's top opening to the basket's base. Thus, when you look down at the base through the top opening, you actually see an octagon, or a double square.

You can probably guess that I designed this basket in one of our long New England winters when I was thinking about spring! I usually feature a highlighted band of color amid the rows of continuous twill weaving up the sides. The handle stretches across the longer sides of the basket and is braided with the black ash.

2 1/2" x 3 1/2" x 3"
Pounded black ash, rattan reed or waxed linen
|
Inspired by a very chubby-cheeked baby, this miniature's hand-pulled and shaped sides create the "cheeks" that are the basket's design highlight. With rows of rattan reed or waxed linen twined above and below the rows of ash weaving and an intricately wrapped handle, I think the original chubby-cheeked Abigail, who was given the very first Abigail's, will cherish her namesake.

This little round basket is formed by hand to achieve the distinctive shape at the base that resembles a kitten's head with the pointed "ears" as the feet that it rests upon. With a continuous weave of the thin black ash up the sides and an accent of wider ash reed and braided grass or waxed linen.

A miniature version of the large, very utilitarian baskets, used through centuries to carry just about anything anywhere, including "to market". The sides are a continuous twill weave of the black ash (sometimes with a wider band of color); the rounded handle, stretching across the short side, is an intricate 3-strand braid to create a fancy version of a traditional, functional basket.

Named for my precious daughter, this was one of my first designs that has continued to be my most popular over the years. I made it first in a very serviceable rattan reed; next came a miniature version of that one; now I also make a teeny size. When I named this basket design for Anna when she was just a toddler, I didn't realize that we would both share the love of teeny things.

Pounded black ash, Delica beads, waxed linen

Inspired by the 70th birthday of a dear friend, this square-to-round basket is woven in the black ash with a pattern of tiny glass Delica beads on the outside, inside, and across the rounded handle. The tiny beads shimmer in celebration of a birthday. A double-wall version of this basket for exhibit features the pattern of tiny beads also on the inside in the same pattern because the basket is woven twice.

LAUN
MINIATURE LAUNDRY BASKET
|

2" x 3" x 1 ½"

Inspired by Grandma's old laundry basket, it has a broad oval shape with the rounded end handles. I would help my grandma lift the clothes from the old wringer washer in her basement and put them into the laundry basket to take outside to pin the clothes on the clothesline to dry. In this obviously more decorative version of the serviceable one, I add a color accent near the top or in the base- each one is different, depending on what color strikes me.

When I was experimenting with new designs one day, this basket evolved to look to me just like Cinderella's magic coach (one of my favorite stories as a child), so that is its name. In my research on antique basketry, I came across a basket similar to this one with the unique double handle diagonally across the top of the basket. This is my version that I usually make in much livelier colors than those found in the 1800's when the original was likely woven.

Recallling one of my favorite Bible stories as a child, I designed this basket with very textured fibers woven among the black ash and shaped it to resemble Moses’ little boat floating among the bulrushes. I still remember the Bible storybook that my mother read to me as a little girl and the picture of the little rush boat that carried Baby Moses to safety.

TALL
Tall Oval Twill Basket
|

1 3/4" x 2 3/4" x 2"; Black ash with waxed linen lacing the rims

This basket was simply in my head one particular month in the winter, the time of year when I have the time to design new baskets. I love playing with twill weaves because they create movement to the pattern on the basket. The shape was in my head and the twill weave came out through my fingers to create a new design, which I will be introducing in 2006.

My large country garden needs a large basket to accomodate the bounty that arrives in August and September! Ths teeny version would be very substantial in its larger size- with its skids on the base for strength. The quite intricate twill weave on this little basket is something I drew out on graph paper initially and must really concentrate upon while weaving. The step-up in the continuous twill weave is the subtle accent and "ascent" that made me think of Jacob's Ladder- one of my favorite childhood Bible stories.

This is the basket that happened to fall on my 2000th. I had created this basket over the winter of 2008 and it didn't yet have a name but happened to be a meaningful number for me, so that became its name. I loved creating this curvaceous oval shape, the deep twill weave, and the raspberry color that now seems wedded to this design. The actual #2000 is in my private collection, but I have some additional ones in stock.

Over the very long winter of 2007/2008, I was keeping cabin fever at bay in my usual way- weaving in my studio. I had acquired a new material for me- waxed cotton cord- and used it to make these little round baskets in a variety of colors (shown here in a jaunty stack). Its supple feeling, so much like suede, gave the basket its name.

It was the beautiful colors of the fibers that I acquired that led me to design this basket, specifically highlighting the dessert colors that I use for it. Each time I make it, my hands craft a different shape, but the gorgeous earthy colors are there in each one and have given birth to its name.

April Fool is a "tongue in cheek" tribute to my Mom and Dad who have now, in 2008, been married 58 years as of April 1st. The lacy appearance of this weaving pattern is a subtle reference to bridal lace. The shape is not exactly round, as you would expect, but shaped to point on opposite sides, thus fooling the expectation. Mom and Dad's successful union all these years also fools the expectation of most marriages failing. They set quite an example for Rob and I who now celebrate 35 years together!
