"Getting to the Point"
This black ash miniature basket, my most challenging design to make, has two woven walls that are back to back- essentially two baskets in one. The delicate glass beads make a circuitous path from the inside bottom corner, up around the inside, across the rim and around the handle, crossing the rim to encircle the outside of basket and end at the opposite outside corner, thus mirroring life's oft-challenging journey of "getting to the point"! Height of basket is a mere 3"

"For Abigail"
This unique little basket with "cheeks" was inspired by a photo of a friend's new baby- the roundest cheeks I had ever seen on a little one. Sitting down to weave a basket gift for the baby, I began with a woven base of the black ash, accented around the base with twined rows of rattan, and then hand-shaped the sides into the "cheeks" that reflect those of the baby. Accenting the top of the basket are more twined rows of rattan reed and a handle with an intricately woven design across it. 2" x 3" x 3"

"Evening Star"
I was thinking of the first star that appears in the evening sky as I created this shallow round tiny basket. It features a twill weaving pattern with thin strands of black ash, creating a raised star in the center. The star twill base of the basket is woven in 1/16" wide strips of the black ash and the side twill weave is accomplished with 1/32" wide strands!

Since our winters in NH are long, I have lots of time to observe the snowflakes. It's no wonder they worked their way into this double-walled 2" x 3" shallow tray with two vivid snowflakes set in a forest green background.

"Beaded Birthday Basket"
I created this for a dear friend's birthday. The pounded black ash miniature basket is woven in black ash and trimmed with waxed linen and tiny glass Delica beads. My version with double walls, trimmed inside and outside with an identical pattern of the tiny glass Delica beads was made especially for exhibit. Unless specially requested, I usually make this basket with just one wall that has a simpler bead pattern on the inside. The handle has tiny clusters of the beads criss-crossed with fine waxed linen cord. Size is 3" x 3" x 4".

"SCANDINAVIAN EMBROIDERED BASKET"
In honor of my Swedish great-grandfather who came to America in 1904 as a fine leather shoe artisan, I designed this very Scandinavian miniature. The rows of black ash on the double walls are embroidered with a contrasting color of waxed linen cord on the inside and outside. The weaving of the two separate baskets, both with the embroidery, gives it a finely finished appearance. The arching handle is also embroidered in the waxed linen, much as my Swedish forebears used embroidery to accent their clothing and furnishings.

"CHRYSALIS BASKET"
Shown several ago in my first public exhibit, this double- wall basket (the basket is woven twice to give two finished surfaces) displays an intricate twill weave with thin weavers to create a swirling pattern both inside and outside. The hand-shaping to flare out all around and then draw in at the top is meant to reflect the shape of a chrysalis.

"Scandinavian Tray"
Continuing the connection to my Swedish forebears, I designed another exhibit piece to look very Scandinavian with its red embroidery and very finely braided handle trim. The outer basket and inner basket are both embroidered separately and then brought together at the rim and laced together to make a finely finished basket both inside and outside. The rounded end handles are embellished with a 7 strand braid of waxed linen, creating a celebratory accent. Besides being fun to work on in the long winter months, the red colors brighten the short days, just as they must have in decades past in Sweden.

"DOUBLE BEADED TRIANGLE BASKET"
In the winter of 2002/2003, I set myself the challenge of creating a triangular basket, after experimenting greatly with the hexagon weave. Thus, out of modified hexagon-weave base to create the triangle shape, I wove this double-wall miniature. It’s finished inside basket is decorated with a pattern of tiny glass Delica beads, joined together at the top rim with the outside basket that is also accented with a more extensive pattern of the tiny glass Delica beads, giving it a sort of Art Deco flair.

"Indecision"
I created this basket especially for this exhibit to exemplify the centuries-old tradition of basketry. I still work with mostly natural materials, do the shaping by hand without the use of molds, just as was done centuries ago, and carry on a family tradition of fine craftsmanship. When my great-grandfather, Johann Frederick Forsberg came from Sweden in 1904, expecting to continue his fine work as a leather shoe artisan, he had to alter his profession because of the mechanization of shoe construction. By weaving my baskets by hand, I am carrying on this fine crafting tradition. With “Indecision” I make a slight nod to technology by incorporating tiny glass Delica beads, each one very precisely machine-produced.

"Out of the Darkness"
This particular basket is very close to my heart because it was born out of a very difficult emotional time. As I worked through some deep things and a very dark time, my hands worked as a therapy for my soul. Everything about it is symbolic of the journey for me that winter of 2004-2005. As the swirls of reed circle the top of the basket in a free-form way, so I emerged "Out of the Darkness".

"Scandinavian Star"
I think a lot about my Swedish ancestors who risked everything to come to America over 100 years ago. My great-grandfather, a fine leather craftsmen, passed through Ellis Island in 1904 to join my grandfather, who had come a few years earlier. Grandpa Forsberg was a carpenter and cabinet maker who spoke broken English, played the accordian, and stayed with our family in Pennsylvania during the hot Florida summers. Many of my Swedish forebears worked with their hands, and my work carries on that tradition. This little star basket has a very Scandinavian finely braided trim of 7 strands of waxed linen cord on each tiny handle and a band near the top. The weaving strands are just 1/32" wide!

"Northern Lights"
As my husband Rob and I are out walking our dog on winter nights in the country, we sometimes are privileged and blessed to see a gorgeous display of indigo flashing lights spread out across the dark sky. It is such a rare treat to be celebrated- thus the sparkling indigo beads of this miniature basket with the pattern of the beads, inside and outside, evoking the flashing Northern Lights in the winter sky.

"The Windmills of My Mind"
As the song goes, "Like a circle in a spiral, like a wheel within a wheel..." Sometimes my mind is moving at the speed of light with too many ideas to ever keep up with or bring to fruition. This exhibit basket exemplifies some of that round-and-round that goes on. The shiny glass beads weave a pattern that follows the twill of the black ash around the basket and then another intricate pattern accents the handle. Except on those nights when my windmill mind keeps me awake with ideas, I am grateful for the challenge and color it all brings to my life!

"Blossom in the Pink"
This delightfully hand sculpted basket with its bright pink hue is meant to evoke the flower blossoms in my abundant perennial garden. I exclusively hand-shape all my teeny creations and love that my hands are always directly touching and "controlling" the black ash- this time to flare out as a fragile blossom does.

"Tradewinds"
The prototype of this basket resulted from "playing" with twill weaves. My husband, the weather fanatic, gave it its name because of the resemblance to the tradewinds movement on weather maps. I then hand-shaped the finished basket more like a globe to even more evoke the tradewinds of the world.

"Safe Harbor"
My husband Rob and I love the coast of Maine. Our favorite way to spend our anniversary is to return there where we originally spent our honeymoon in 1973. We often see there little boats bobbing safely in their tucked-away harbors in coastal inlets. Such a safe and secure feeling is what I was striving to bring back thoughts of with this little exhibit basket.

"Ebony Treasure"
I created this little sculpted basket especially for the Black and White exhibit, using a graphic contrast between the dyed and plain strands of black ash. I wanted to shape an unusual rim treatment and my hands created this little "pagodaesque" form. It was such a little treasure in its darker hues, thus I named it "Ebony Treasure".

For the 2008 Exhibit at the annual LNHC Fair, I created this green-hued basket and hand shaped it to look like a lotus blossom. In order to make a statement in the exhibit, it is larger than most of my miniatures. Displayed on a small black easel, it is a striking piece!

"Party Hat"
To celebrate the League's 75th anniversary, I decided to make a hat out of a basket, laying awake several nights to flesh out the idea that had formed. Finally, as I sat down to weave, it gradually took place as my fingers worked. The hat is made from an upside-down kitten head shaped basket with black ash curls of varying colors around the sides and the top fringe of waxed linen threads color-coordinated with the side curls. It's a very festive and fun tribute to the League that I have been a juried part of since 1997. Sold in 2009
